German Military sizing

The German sizing system is clear and simple - there are four different heights and lots of widths. One thing to consider is that the Germans seem to be an awfully short armed people, basically this means their jacket lenghts are overstated - by about 5 cm. If you're just in between two height sizes, choose the longer one.

Choosing a size is easy - choose the height size you fit into based on how tall you are, then measure your chest and waist circumference to find out the correct width. (If you measure inches, multiply them by 2.54 to convert to centimetres.)
An example

Our test model is

    179 cm tall,
    has a 82 cm waist
and a chest circumference of 89 cm

Sizes 06-11 are for 170-180 cm tall people, so that's the starting point.
As his waist is over 80 cm and less than 85 cm, the perfect pants would be a size 07 (85 cm waist, 80 cm inseam)
His chest measures just under 90 cm, so the jacket is a size 06 (chest circumference 90 cm).

Headgear

Head wear measurement is the circumference of the crown, measured around the skull, about one centimeter above the ears. Make sure to measure accurately - keep the measure tape tight. Generally, you'll want a hat that is not too small - 1 cm wont make much difference though. Some headgear (especially berets) will loosen and "grown in size" when used. This can be accounted for by ordering one size smaller.

Shoes

Here is a general sizing table provided by WELLCO. The size chart helps compare US sizes with the European sizing (French Size) and vice versa.

The correct manner to measure your foot is to trace your footprint on a piece of paper with a pencil and then measure the dimensions. Another measurement method is to determine the dimensions of properly fitting insoles. Most shoes come with insoles, but if not included insoles can be bought separately. The link above contains information how to how to compare feet and insoles. US shoe sizes are measured in lenght and width.

Take your time when measuring and choosing the right size, as millimeters count (especially international customers). If you are not certain about your size contact us for assistance.

US jackets sizing system

Most modern civilian sizing systems ignore the fact that people come not only in different widths, but in different lengths too. US Army sizing system incorporates both dimensions in a very simple way. The sizes should sound familiar, but beware: civilian S, M, L etc are a completely different thing. US Army X-Large is really pretty effin' large, way bigger than normal civilian XL.

Because of the two different measurements, us sizes have two parts. For an example Medium Regular is Medium in width and Regular in height. Surprisingly, this is the average male size! Medium Long would be exactly the same width but with longer sleeves and hem. Large Regular would be same length as Medium Regular but more roomy on the chest. Most new items come only in regular lengths, because most people fit regular and the manufacturers want to cut costs. We'd like to sell longs and shorts, but what can you do if nobody makes them.

Jackets sizing is a little more forgiving than trousers sizing. If you are very tall, you can take one or more wider. This moves the shoulder seams towards the arms and the end result is that the sleeves cover more arms. The negative is that the jacket will be way too roomy on the waist.
Length

Length sizing can give a little, for an example Regular passes for 183 cm tall person, at least sort of.
Short, for an example Medium Short    160-170 cm
Regular, for an example Small Regular    170-180 cm
Long, for an example Large Long    180-190 cm

East German sizes

People are different sized in two dimensions: height and width. East Germans have taken this into account in a very special way, combining the european sizing system numbers with German language and East German specialities.
Widths

Widths are like normal european sizing system widths, except they do not affect length, and a lot of sizes are left out as unnecessary.
Size     Chest     Waist     Equivalent
44     88 cm     76 cm     Small
48     96 cm     84 cm     Medium
52     104 cm     92 cm     Large
56     112 cm     100 cm     X-Large
60     120 cm     108 cm     2X-Large

A special touch is the noting of different body types by placing special numbers, for an example SK48-0 or SK48-1. 0 means that the chest is about 10 cm larger. 1 means that the chest is normal but waist is about 10 cm larger. 2 means the waist is 20 cm larger. This also affects pants, for some obscure reason - 0 does nothing but 1 and 2 add to the waist.
Lengths

Length is the coolest thing, they are short for German words Superkurz, Kurz, Mittel, Groß, Supergroß ja Übergroß. Here's what we think they mean:
Letter     Estimated height
SK     160-165 cm
K     165-170 cm
M     170-175 cm
G     175-180 cm
SG     180-185 cm
ÜG     185-190 cm

European sizing system, jackets

If you know something about European sizing, you might be aware that there used to be not only numbers, but letters too, for different body types. In practice these haven't been used for a long time.

Regarding width and height: It's easy to get confused, so calm down! If you are taller or thicker than usual, you need a bigger size. The sizes get bigger in both dimensions. This means that if you are 190 cm tall and slim, your waist would happily accept size 50 trousers, but the trousers will be short. Or if you have a lot of belly but you are short, you might need a size 56 jacket, on which the sleeves will be long. Yes, it's a pity if you're funny proportioned. Sometimes it pays to be normal.

As you measure yourself, take the actual measurements, don't add any just to be sure. Correct places for measurements are shown in the picture.

Sizes 42 or 60 and above are very uncommon.

These are measurements of the body, not the garment itself.
